‘Responsible decision’ as Wolves chief explains £38m Joao Gomes sale to Aston Villa | OneFootball

Wolves technical director Matt Jackson has called the £38m sale of Joao Gomes to Aston Villa the responsible decision after the 25-year-old completed his move across the West Midlands.

ExpressAndStar.com reports that Jackson backed the Brazilian to have an outstanding career and said the deal served Wolves’ wider interests as they rebuild under new boss Cesar Peixoto.

Gomes joined from Flamengo for £15m in 2023 and has departed after three and a half years at Molineux. His exit had been widely expected following relegation from the Premier League, although Villa were not viewed as the obvious destination early in the summer.

That shifted when Unai Emery sought midfield reinforcements after Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United and Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury, prompting Villa to act quickly.

Jackson praised Gomes as a model professional and said Wolves must sometimes make tough calls for the collective good. He added that well-run clubs without unlimited resources often work this way and that supporters have generally understood the approach.

Looking ahead, Jackson is confident Wolves will finish the window strongly. Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez arrived early in the summer, while since Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards only winger Rafiki Said has signed. After two weeks of training, he said there will be changes before the deadline while he likes the team’s current shape.
