After a turbulent summer following their relegation back to the Championship last year, which saw Vincent Kompany leave for Bayern Munich, the Clarets turned to Scott Parker to lead them back to the top-flight.

And that’s exactly what happened, with Burnley’s success this season built on an incredible defensive record, which has seen them concede just 15 times in 44 games.

Burnley seal Premier League return with victory over Sheffield United

Parker’s men went into Monday’s game against promotion rivals Sheffield United knowing a victory would send them up, and two goals from Josh Brownhill sealed the win in front of a packed Turf Moor.

Understandably, that sparked wild scenes after the game, as fans ran on the pitch to celebrate with the players.

Those celebrations continued long into the night, and Barnes, who returned to the club in January, told Clarets+, as revealed by the Burnley Express, just how long he intended to keep things going.

I think if anyone goes home before 6am, well I’m not letting them, they’re getting dragged out.”

Burnley are right to enjoy the moment following promotion

Even though Burnley were expected to be in the mix to win promotion, they deserve plenty of credit for how they have gone about things this season.

Losing Kompany was a big blow, and Parker’s style of play is very different to the Belgian’s, so the players needed to adapt, and several key performers from the previous campaign moved on.

Yet, the group bought into what the manager wanted, and the defensive foundations have been built on hard work and excellent organisation from the entire XI.

Whether they are capable of handling the step-up to the Premier League is a question for another day, but, right now, they deserve to be enjoying the moment because the Championship is a tough, demanding league.

It’s no surprise to see Barnes leading the way in the celebrations, and whilst he may not have got the number of starts he wanted on his return to the club, he did make big contributions as he came off the bench to regularly help the side hold on to three points.

Plus, he was sure to have been a big influence in the dressing room, and with his contract expiring in the summer, this could be a great way for his playing days at Burnley to end, as part of another side that has won promotion.
