Liverpool have been dealt a significant setback with Alisson Becker ruled out until the November international break after sustaining a hamstring injury against Galatasaray in midweek.
The Brazilian goalkeeper, who has become a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success since arriving from Roma in 2018, was forced off during the second half of Tuesday’s Champions League defeat at RAMS Park. The injury came moments after he denied Victor Osimhen in a decisive one-on-one, but he immediately pulled up and was unable to continue.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his concern in his post-match press conference. Speaking frankly about the incident, he said:
“When he sprinted back he felt something. Normally, when a player goes to the floor and doesn’t return to the pitch, it’s never a good sign. I think it’s 100 per cent certain he won’t be available for Saturday.”
That Saturday fixture, a trip to Chelsea, will now see summer signing Giorgi Mamardashvili step into the Premier League starting XI for the first time. The Georgian goalkeeper replaced Alisson on Tuesday night and is expected to feature heavily in the coming weeks.
With the international break looming in November, Alisson’s absence is projected to rule him out of seven fixtures across three competitions. Those matches include:
This period represents one of Liverpool’s most demanding stretches of the season, and losing their first-choice goalkeeper for encounters against major rivals will be a considerable blow.
Alisson’s latest setback adds to a growing list of injury concerns in recent years. The 33-year-old missed 26 matches during the 2024–25 campaign due to recurring hamstring issues. In addition, he endured spells on the sidelines with a thigh injury and concussion, restricting his availability for both club and country.
Despite these interruptions, his influence on Liverpool remains indisputable. Since joining in 2018, he has made 307 appearances and registered 129 clean sheets across all competitions. His consistency, leadership and ability to produce decisive moments have been vital to Liverpool’s domestic and European success.
While Liverpool supporters will be anxious about coping without their No.1, the enforced absence provides an early test for Mamardashvili. The 23-year-old was brought in during the summer with a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers, and this run of games represents a chance to establish himself in the Premier League spotlight.
How well Mamardashvili performs could have a direct impact on Liverpool’s ambitions this season. With high-profile fixtures against Manchester United, Manchester City, and Real Madrid on the horizon, his ability to step in seamlessly will be under intense scrutiny.
Alisson’s injury is undoubtedly a setback for Liverpool, but the coming weeks may reveal whether their summer planning has given them the depth required to navigate such challenges. His return after the November international break will be eagerly awaited, particularly if Liverpool can remain competitive across all fronts in his absence.
