The Spanish football federation has suspended an Asturian Segunda division referee who is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a sex worker while posing as a police officer. The federation announced in a statement that an internal inquiry is open and the measure is precautionary with immediate effect.

He was arrested by the National Police about 15 days ago after a complaint from a woman of Latin American origin.

The complaint alleges he wore police insignia and warned she would face problems because of her irregular status if she refused the sexual acts he proposed.

As part of the investigation, officers searched the referee’s home to check whether he held other uniforms from police bodies for similar practices.

He could face a charge of sexual assault, which carries a significant custodial sentence if the case reaches trial. It also remains to be determined whether the reported conduct was an isolated incident or a pattern that could surface in other cases.
