The Canadian footballer completed his first full season back at the club, playing primarily as a winger. He became a crucial player in John Herdman’s squad.
Although Laryea, 29, is naturally a right-back, under Herdman’s tactical system, he played as a wing-back or winger, displaying very positive performances. After facing injuries throughout his career, Laryea has returned at an impressive level, contributing significant minutes this season.
Laryea had a remarkable season with Toronto FC. After struggling with injuries and limited playing time in previous years, this season allowed him to make a strong comeback, showing his potential as a right winger.
This is expected to be an important role for the club next year as Toronto FC begins planning for the 2025 MLS season, aiming for better results than in 2024. Laryea played 15 matches for Toronto FC this season, accumulating over 1,000 minutes across three competitions: MLS, the Canadian Championship, and the Leagues Cup.
In the MLS, he scored one goal and provided three assists, contributing to the team’s offense thanks to his role as a wing-back or winger. However, Laryea didn’t play as a winger in every match, as he was often deployed as a right-back, showcasing his defensive abilities.
Despite these varying roles, his performances highlighted his importance to the squad. Looking ahead, Toronto FC is expected to keep him in the team, as Laryea is under contract with the club until December 2026. Given his positive impact, there is even talk of extending his contract.
Laryea’s strong form also earned him a call-up to the Canadian national team, where he had a notable role this season. He played impressively in the 2024 Copa América, where Canada emerged as the surprise team, reaching the semifinals in this highly competitive tournament. It’s been a great year for Richie Laryea.
