Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva has received support from stand-out performer Rico Lewis following Tuesday night’s win over Villarreal in eastern Spain.

The Premier League giants produced a commanding performance at Estadio de la Cerámica, ending a frustrating run of away results in the UEFA Champions League with a 0-2 victory over Villarreal.

Goals from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva in the first-half ensured Pep Guardiola’s side returned to Manchester with maximum points on the road and their European campaign back on track after a minor blip in a 2-2 draw away to AS Monaco last time around.

Manchester City’s attacking rhythm was evident from the outset, with Savinho and Rico Lewis instrumental in stretching Villarreal’s defensive shape. Haaland opened the scoring with a poacher’s finish from Lewis’ precise delivery, before Bernardo Silva doubled the lead with a well-timed header from Savinho’s cross.

Despite a late push from the home side, Pep Guardiola’s men controlled proceedings and recorded their first European away win in over a year – a performance that will have pleased the manager after recent scrutiny over Manchester City’s form on the road.

Speaking during his post-match media duties with Manchester City’s official club website, Rico Lewis stressed his belief that some forget ‘so quickly’ just how good the club’s captain in Bernardo Silva is as a player.

“Fully deserved, and an unbelievable player,” Lewis said on the Portuguese midfielder’s performance and goal to make it 0-2 on the night to Manchester City.

The versatile City defender continued on Bernardo, “I think people forget so quickly how good he is, and he showed today he’s run more than anyone, he scored, playing higher up, lower down – he can do everything! He’s an unbelievable player to play with!”

Bernardo Silva’s display against Villarreal came as a timely reminder of his influence within Pep Guardiola’s system. Despite increased competition for attacking roles this season following the re-emergence of Savinho, the 30-year-old continues to prove his worth with decisive contributions.

The Portuguese international, who is into the final year of his Manchester City contract, remains integral to Pep Guardiola’s plans, particularly given his adaptability and leadership qualities in key moments.

His performance in Spain not only silenced recent criticism but also reaffirmed why he continues to be regarded as one of the most intelligent and hard-working midfielders in world football.

With crucial fixtures ahead in both domestic and European competitions, Pep Guardiola will be hoping that Bernardo Silva’s form continues to inspire those around him.
