The ex-Everton striker is having a torrid time at the Blades right now, and it got even worse on Friday night at Portman Road
It was another sombre night for Sheffield United in their first match back after the September international break, as they were hammered 5-0 by Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Friday.
The Blades were hoping that new signings late on in the summer transfer window, coupled by two weeks off for international matches will have given head coach Ruben Selles more time to get his team organised ahead of the trip to Suffolk - but somehow, things got worse.
The Spaniard shocked many people by dropping both top scorer Tyrese Campbell, as well as last season's Championship Player of the Year Gus Hamer to the bench for this match, with Selles confirming pre-match that tactical reasons was behind the decision.
By the time that both players arrived onto the pitch on the 62nd minute of the contest, United were 3-0 down and sinking without a trace, and Selles' decision to bench both players was one of the major talking points of the night - as was the performance of Tom Cannon.
Despite his slow start to the 2025-26 season - and slow start to life in general at Bramall Lane since his £10 million move from Leicester City in January - Cannon was handed a surprise start by Selles as Sheffield United's lone striker against Ipswich.
The Republic of Ireland international had started just one of United's first four Championship matches, and that came out of position on the right flank, but the 22-year-old was entrusted with a leading role in Suffolk - but he was barely noticeable.
In his 62 minutes on the pitch, Cannon had just one shot, and worryingly a measly 10 touches of the ball in that time, showing that he was barely involved in the match whatsoever as Ipswich ran rampant.
And it appears that many Sheffield United fans think his time should be up when it comes to being involved with the first-team setup, with one supporter offered some potentially harsh criticism of the ex-Everton man.
Another United fan meanwhile is unsure what Cannon offers at the top end of the pitch - a far cry from the player that was a popular goalscorer on loan at Preston North End and Stoke City.
This Sheffield United supporter is bewildered that the club spent so much money on the striker, who has scored just once since his January switch.
Another member of the Blades fanbase hinted that Cannon was absolutely anonymous on the pitch, although he did manage to muster up the first shot on target of the match for United a few minutes before he was hooked.
And in response to Cannon having six touches in the whole first half, one Sheffield United fan claimed he'd rather have Rhian Brewster - now at Derby County - back than the Irish striker.
The writing may be on the wall for Ruben Selles at Sheffield United after just a few months in charge, and it wouldn't be a huge shock to see him gone by the time the weekend is out.
That could bring a new lease of life to some of the current crop of players should that happen, but regardless, in his time at Bramall Lane since January, Tom Cannon has severely underwhelmed.
He came with big expectations given the eight-figure fee that was splashed out by owners COH Sports for his services, but just one goal in 22 appearances in the Championship isn't good enough.
For whatever reason, it isn't clicking for Cannon in South Yorkshire. His former loan club Preston North End wanted to take him on loan for the rest of the 2025-26 season on deadline day, with an option to buy if promoted to the Premier League included, but the deal did not happen.
On this fresh evidence, it may have been for the best if United let Cannon move to a club - even if it was temporarily - that he's already well-liked at to try and get his mojo back, but now that is off the table, he needs to do something drastic in order to turn his fortunes around at his current club.
