Rio court rejects Flamengo bid in Taça das Bolinhas case | OneFootball

Flamengo have suffered another setback after the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice rejected their bid to revisit the Taça das Bolinhas case, keeping São Paulo as the intended recipient.

According to Coluna Do Fla, the trophy remains with Caixa Econômica Federal, though São Paulo can now formally request delivery. Flamengo do not intend to drop the fight.

Denying the appeal, rapporteur judge Fábio Uchoa Pinto de Miranda Montenegro said the matter had already been settled in higher courts and could not be reopened in Rio. He also reaffirmed that Sport are the sole 1987 champions, underpinning São Paulo’s claim.

Last week Flamengo said they had a favourable order from the 12th Federal Civil Court in São Paulo, which reassessed the case and held that jurisdiction lay with the Federal Court in Rio de Janeiro. Proceedings continued following that order.

Created in 1975 by the then Confederação Brasileira de Desportos, the Taça das Bolinhas would go to the first club to win three straight national titles or five overall.

Flamengo argue they met that mark with the 1992 Brasileirão, but the outcome hinges on the 1987 title. The CBF recognised Flamengo in 2011, however in 2018 the Supreme Federal Court kept Sport as the only 1987 champions, leaving São Paulo first to reach five after 2007 and with the right to the trophy.
