River Plate ‘to appoint’ new sporting director, Pablo Longoria among candidates

According to The Athletic, Pablo Longoria has been linked with River Plate’s sporting director role.

The former Olympique de Marseille president left earlier this month. It was a protracted exit, triggered by Roberto De Zerbi’s departure as manager weeks earlier.

During that period, sporting director Medhi Benatia briefly left then returned. On his return he was handed greater authority, and Longoria was moved to institutional duties.

The Argentinian side are seeking a new sporting director and have targeted Longoria. Ramon Planes, currently at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, is also in contention, alongside a third, unnamed candidate.

Initial talks have already taken place. A swift return to football could follow for Longoria.
