Rob Edwards hailed Wolves teenager Jerome Abbey after the midfielder set a club Premier League age record, and said the academy’s progress could inspire others.
At 16 years, eight months and eight days, Abbey became Wolves’ youngest Premier League player and the club’s second youngest overall when he came off the bench at Burnley. ExpressAndStar.com notes that Mateus Mane has become a first-team regular under Edwards and Tom Edozie has had senior opportunities this season.
Edwards said it was a really good moment for Abbey, praised his ability and character, and felt he handled the cameo well after two midfielders went off.
He added that Wolves have a strong academy with staff working extremely hard, and that Mane, Edozie and now Abbey offer inspiration to those coming through. If coaches feel players are ready, opportunities will be there, though standards must be met and Abbey still has plenty of work ahead.
Senior striker Adam Armstrong welcomed Abbey’s debut and said breaking through so young is the best feeling, describing both youngsters as top talents who can only improve and saying he was buzzing for them.
