Robbie Fowler Net Worth & Why He Is Richer Than Most Ex-Footballers

To Liverpool supporters, Robbie Fowler will always be considered ‘God’. The nickname given to the club’s one-time number nine is a reference to his clinical finishing in front of goal, whilst his return to Anfield under Rafa Benítez was celebrated by those who knew just how good he was in his prime. Interestingly, though,

Fowler’s fortune didn’t come from football as much as it did from his property investment. The striker was quick to use the money that he earned as a player to invest in property, which soon saw him become known as ‘Britain’s richest sportsman’.

Who is Robbie Fowler?

Although people of a certain age will be heartbroken to realise it, there are more than a few Liverpool supporters that might well have little more than a passing knowledge of who Robbie Fowler actually is. Born Robert Bernard Fowler in the Toxteth area of the city on the ninth of April 1975, he grew up as Robert Ryder, taking his mother’s surname. He was an Everton supporter in his youth, travelling to see both home and away games of the Blues before signing as a youth team player for Liverpool when he left school in the summer of 1991. He signed a professional contract on his birthday the following year.

During his first spell at the club, Fowler played 236 league games for the Reds, scoring 120 goals. That included 12 goals in his first 13 starts, meaning that it was all but impossible for him to be left out of the team. He enjoyed his first trophy when he helped the team win the League Cup in 1995. He was considered to be the most natural finisher in England, even though this was reflected in the number of caps he got for the national team. Part of the famed ‘Spice Boys’ era, he won a treble with Liverpool in the 2000-2001 season before being sold to Leeds United, playing for Man City before returning to Anfield in 2006.

How he Made His Money

Robbie Fowler was twice named on the Sunday Times Rich List. Whilst that might not seem all that unusual in the day and age of the huge sums of money that the best players are paid, it would be untrue to suggest that it was through his work as a footballer alone that he made his fortune. That is partly down to the fact that footballers weren’t paid the sort of eye-watering sums of money that players get given today, whilst also being due to the wise investments he made whilst he was playing. Virgil van Dijk signed a contract for nearly £400,000 per week, for example, but Fowler is worth nearly double the Dutchman.

That is according to Celebrity Net Worth, which is a website that tracks the net worth of…well, celebrities. When he was interviewed in 2015 about his financial situation, Fowler said that one of the best moves that he made was to listen to the advice of Graeme Souness, who told him to seek the expertise of a financial advisor. That was when he was around the age of 18, investing in property, amongst other things, joining partners in order to ensure that his relatively meagre wages at the time could go a little bit further than they would’ve been able to do if he was investing on his own.

We All Live in a Robbie Fowler House

In the early 2000s, as football fans around the country began to understand just how much money Fowler was worth thanks to the property investments he had made, supporters of Manchester City began to sing a song on the terraces. Going to the tune of Yellow Submarine by The Beatles, they would belt out, “We all live in a Robbie Fowler house.” By the time he left the club, which had yet to be taken over by the Royal Family of Abu Dhabi, the tally of houses owned by the Scouser stood at 84. Whilst the idea of everyone living in a home owned by the striker was ridiculous, it’s fair to say his property empire was impressive.

The decisions that he made during his career mean that Fowler’s personal fortune is believed to stand at around £38 million. Although he’s had stints at being a manager, including a spell working in Saudi Arabia, football only really helped Fowler to get onto the ladder to becoming rich, rather than made him a fortune in and of itself. He has been generous with his knowledge, though. Rather than just keep it all to himself, Fowler moved to set up an academy that looked to teach aspiring investors exactly how they can make the most of their money through workshops and courses.
