Sir Jim Ratcliffe heavily backed Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim in the summer, handing him £225m worth of talent.

United recorded their worst ever Premier League finish last term, leading to question marks over Amorim’s position at Old Trafford.

Still, the club’s hierarchy not only made expensive signings but also offloaded high-profile stars Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho after the pair fell out with Amorim, underlining their fate in the Portuguese.

Amorim keen on Lewandowski

However, Ratcliffe has decided to put his foot down amid Amorim’s interest in a superstar striker.

According to The Mirror, Amorim is a “long-time admirer” of Robert Lewandowski, who is nearing the end of his contract at Barcelona.

The Poland international will be available on a free transfer at the end of season, with Barca yet to offer him a new deal.

Lewandowski is viewed as one of Europe’s best strikers, and Amorim reportedly believes luring the Barcelona talisman to Old Trafford “would have a positive impact on his side and help some of his other players develop.”

Recently, the Polish centre forward revealed that he came very close to joining United over a decade ago after saying “yes” to Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012.

Ratcliffe blocks Lewandowski transfer

However, Ratcliffe has put “the block on a shock move” to sign Lewandowski.

It is claimed that the INEOS chief has made it clear United will “not repeat mistakes of the past, when it comes to indulging in signing players coming towards the end of their careers.”

Further, the 37-year-old is currently earning £540,000-a-week at Camp Nou. Ratcliffe is determined to trim United’s wage bill and doesn’t view the ex-Bayern star to be a “viable option”.

More importantly, United signed Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig for £66.3m, excluding add-ons, ahead of the season.

The youngster has had a very promising start to life in Manchester. As such, the arrival of a striker like Lewandowski would do more harm than good.
