Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi praised Richarlison yet lamented the forward’s recent behaviour, saying the Brazilian bore responsibility for his own absence from competition during a turbulent window.

According to Globo.com, the 29-year-old saw moves fall through, including a protracted attempt to join Vasco that ended on Friday, after he posted a video telling fans he had come very close to playing for his boyhood club.

De Zerbi said the club had not yet taken a decision on its squad list and added that leaving the player out would have left him with regrets, but that events were a consequence of Richarlison choosing his own path.

He said he regretted having one fewer option, called Richarlison a good person and noted he had spoken to him many times, investing time to persuade him to stay. He also said he knows what truly happened and cannot forget the past 45 days, adding he is not frustrated.

The Italian added that the club had made efforts and that the outcome could have been different, suggesting even a stay and new contract had been possible given Richarlison’s importance and contribution last season.
