Roberto Mancini has told friends he could be in contention to become the next Manchester United manager if Ruben Amorim is fired, according to the Sun.
The Red Devils boss has been under pressure for weeks and needs to start winning regularly to hold on to his job.
Mancini knows the Premier League well, having helped Manchester City win the title in 2011-12. He is currently out of work.
The 60-year-old Italian lives in France alongside Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and they have met at social functions a couple of times.
It is unknown whether they have discussed football or the situation at the Old Trafford club.
Mancini won three Serie A titles with Inter Milan and also picked up one Turkish Cup with Galatasaray after leaving Man City.
He also won the 2020 European Championship with Italy and would fancy his chances of helping Man United return to the top of English football.
Mancini spent three and a half years at Man City and also has experience managing Fiorentina, Lazio, Zenit St Petersburg and Saudi Arabia.
He knows a thing or two about turning the fortunes of clubs around and could be perfect for Man United if they need a new manager anytime soon.
Ratcliffe recently claimed he is willing to give Amorim two more years to prove himself, but things could change if the results do not improve significantly going forward.
Man United have been linked with Gareth Southgate and Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, and more names will emerge if Amorim is sacked.
Whether Mancini would be considered for the job if it becomes available is unknown, but taking a punt on him would not be a bad idea.
