Roberto Martinez believes Cristiano Ronaldo could keep playing for as long as he chooses, with the 41-year-old’s retirement timetable still unclear. He is almost certain to lead his country at the 2026 World Cup this summer, in what is likely to be his international farewell.

"His physical stats are of a player that could go on and on and on. I think it's more a question of when he'll feel that is the right time," he told the BBC.

Although he now plays in the Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo remains prolific, scoring 17 goals in 18 league matches for Al-Nassr this season. His career haul now stands at more than 960 for club and country, underpinned by meticulous conditioning beyond his 40th birthday.

The day of his retirement nevertheless appears to be edging closer. In November 2025 he said he expected to stay in the game for one or two more years and admitted he would step away soon.

In December he said his passion remained high, he wanted to keep playing in the Middle East or Europe, and he still aimed to win trophies and reach 1,000 goals if he avoided injuries.

Martinez added: "When he doesn't see that he can help the team, he'll be the one that will decide when to stop."
