Liverpool vice-captain Andy Robertson has spoken with deep emotion about the loss of Diogo Jota, admitting the tragedy is something he will “probably never get over”.

We saw from his deeply personal social media and Anfield tributes to the man he called MacJota, that our No.26 had a strong bond with his mate.

The Portugal international and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car crash in July, just weeks before the start of our title defence.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Robertson reflected on how the 28-year-old’s death has changed the squad.

“I don’t think anyone could care less about football when things like that happen,” said the Scotland captain.

“Such a shock. Devastating for his family first and foremost but obviously devastating for us as a group of lads.”

The left-back, who has been at Anfield since 2017, admitted the tragedy reshaped priorities.

“It puts life into perspective as to what’s important – spending time with your family, spending time with your kids, because you never know what’s around the corner.”

Robertson explained that, as a senior figure, he feels a responsibility to help guide others through this period.

“It’s the toughest thing we’ll ever go through. Losing one of your closest mates for me was hugely difficult and it’s something we’ll probably never get over.

“But we have to carry the memories we’ve got with us, and as long as we continue to do that, then it’ll always be in our thoughts. He will always be in our hearts.”

Leadership role after tragedy

The 31-year-old also revealed the tragedy coincided with his decision to remain at Liverpool, despite competition for his place.

“The decision was already made before the tragedy but I knew in that moment that the club needed me. I know I am one of the leaders in the team and I have obviously been made vice-captain now.”

Robertson spoke of the difficult moments since, including walking out in front of supporters for the first time without Jota, and attending his funeral.

“It’s absolute madness to even say. It won’t get easier but maybe we can numb the pain a little bit as time goes on. It’s up to us as leaders to guide us through that.”

The Scot will be central to Arne Slot’s plans this season, with his experience invaluable as the Reds look to build on last year’s Premier League title win.
