Robin Roefs escaped the fiercest flak as the Netherlands’ goalkeeping options came under fire after their 2-2 draw with Japan.

Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen started that opener and his nervy display drew a stinging verdict from Johan Derksen, who said none of the three keepers were true internationals, as quoted by Vandaag Inside.

Derksen added that Roefs has the talent to become the best, though he still needs top-level experience, while he remained unconvinced by Verbruggen and unimpressed with Mark Flekken.

The 23-year-old joined Sunderland for a reported £9 million last summer and excelled, keeping 10 clean sheets in 35 Premier League games as Regis Le Bris’ side finished seventh to reach the Europa League.

Roefs has been a regular in Ronald Koeman’s squads over the last year. After six straight qualifiers on the bench, he won his first senior cap in a pre-finals defeat to Algeria earlier this month, then returned to the bench against Japan.

He is one of three Sunderland players selected by the Netherlands for the World Cup finals.
