Rodri remains a Man City for the time being after Barcelona had their opening transfer offer for the midfielder rejected.

Barça and Real Madrid are both interested in signing the 30-year-old after he guided Spain to FIFA World Cup glory as captain this summer.

The former Atletico Madrid player has just 12 months left to run on his current contract, opening the possibility of City selling him now before losing him on a free transfer next year.

Multiple reports claim that Barcelona submitted a bid of £40 million plus add-ons, which City have rejected as it is well below their valuation of Rodri.

The Premier League club are said to want around £60 million for a player they consider one of the most important in their squad.

Talks have paused, but Barcelona are not giving up on their hopes of signing Rodri and are plotting another offer in the coming days, according to Sky Sports News. They add that, while City do not want to sell him, they would not stand in his way if he chooses to leave the club.

The Athletic report that City insist “no meaningful club-to-club talks” have taken place yet, as the Catalan Club have not made what they consider a “serious” bid.

Rodri’s agent, Pablo Barquero, has said that his client told Real Madrid he would prefer a move to Barcelona instead of joining Jose Mourinho’s team.

Meanwhile, The Athletic’s David Ornstein also reports that City have “reached an agreement in principle” with Lille to sign Ayoub Bouaddi for around £110 million plus £5 million in add-ons.
