According to O Jogo, Rodrigo Mora’s departure has created a vacancy in FC Porto’s midfield and the board are considering a replacement only if it involves minimal outlay.

Francesco Farioli could be handed another option if a suitable opportunity arises before early September, with no talks under way and only scouting at present.

In attack the picture differs. Santiago Giménez has recovered from his World Cup injury and is awaiting clarity on his future, with a stay at Milan not expected. Milan rejected Porto’s opening proposal, a free loan with a €15m option that could become an obligation based on individual targets.

The board led by André Villas-Boas believed that offer would suffice, but Milan deemed it too low. The Italian club want a loan with a fee and a purchase option of €20m-€25m to limit losses on the Mexican, signed from Feyenoord for about €32m.

Following that refusal, Porto paused negotiations, with no developments on Wednesday, and have begun contacting alternative forward targets. There is an expectation Farioli could receive a new striker soon.
