Rodrygo has suffered right hamstring tendinosis and will miss Real Madrid’s trip to Mestalla, denying him a rare chance to start on the left in Vinicius’s absence.
According to AS, the forward is expected to be sidelined for around two weeks, ruling him out of Valencia and making the Real Sociedad game highly unlikely.
His issues trace back to the Supercopa, when he finished the semi-final feeling pain and played the final short of full fitness. He then missed Albacete, Levante and Mónaco, did not feature at La Cerámica despite making the bench, returned against Benfica and was sent off, bringing a two match European ban. He played 14 minutes at Rayo Vallecano before this setback.
Rodrygo has not started under Arbeloa. This season he has logged 1,071 of 3,060 minutes, 35%, and started 10 of 34 games, 29%. His Champions League strike ended a run of 32 matches and 1,415 minutes without a goal, with three in total, against Manchester City, Alavés and Atlético de Madrid in Arabia.
He had been regaining prominence, starting Xabi Alonso’s final four games, Sevilla, Betis, Atlético and Barcelona. Vinicius’s suspension for a fifth booking left the left flank free at Mestalla, but the injury has closed that door. February now points to a single outing, at Osasuna on 21 February, before he focuses on returning at full tilt.
