Jurgen Klopp is close to being confirmed as Germany head coach after a disappointing World Cup, where Paraguay knocked the Mannschaft out in the round of 32. His exit from Red Bull’s football structure could create an opening for former Benfica boss Roger Schmidt.

Bild reports that Red Bull have prepared a shortlist to maintain the project Klopp put in place, and Schmidt is among those under consideration. He is currently working as a sporting director in Japan’s J-League.

The former Liverpool manager is set to leave his role as Red Bull’s general director of football if the national-team appointment is confirmed.

Schmidt, 58, is not alone in the frame. Red Bull are also assessing Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche and former France international Thierry Henry, who has focused on television work in recent years.

Schmidt led Benfica from 2022 to 2024, overseeing 115 matches, with 80 wins, 20 draws and 15 defeats. He won the Campeonato Nacional in 2022/23 and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira in 2023/24.
