Goals from Rasmus Kristensen (5’) and debutant Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab (80’) were not enough for Eintracht as VfB Stuttgart came from behind to win 3-2 at the MHP Arena on Tuesday evening.

Three enforced changes

Head coach Dino Toppmöller was forced to make three changes to the side that started Friday’s 3-3 draw at home to Borussia Dortmund. Can Uzun was ruled out at short notice with a minor foot problem, while Hugo Larsson and Nathaniel Brown were absent due to illness. Aurèle Amenda and Ellyes Skhiri were both brought in, while Arnaud Kalimuendo was handed his first start since joining the club from Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

Tough first half after bright start

Stuttgart began the new year with a 4-1 victory at fellow high-flyers Bayer Leverkusen, but it was Eintracht who made the brighter start at the MHP Arena. They took the lead with only five minutes on the clock as Ritsu Doan swung in a teasing cross towards the near post, where Rasmus Kristensen was on hand to loop a header over goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and into the bottom corner.

However, the Eagles were dealt a blow when January signing Younes Ebnoutalib was forced off after suffering an injury in a collision with Stuttgart defender Jeff Chabot. The hosts equalised seven minutes later when Kaua Santos was unable to hold on to Maximilian Mittelstädt’s cross and Ermedin Demirovic pounced, prodding home the loose ball from close range.

Germany striker Deniz Undav completed the turnaround ten minutes before half-time, collecting Josha Vagnoman’s pass before finding the bottom corner via a slight deflection.Amaimouni-Echghouyab goal not enough

Chris Führich flashed a shot narrowly wide of the far post early in the second half, but the Eagles were desperately unlucky not to make it 2-2 when Ansgar Knauff crashed a magnificent, thunderous volley off the crossbar from the edge of the box.

The home side continued to create the better chances, though, with Undav sending a low drive narrowly wide of the upright before being denied by a fine Santos save not long afterwards.

January arrival Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab made an instant impact after coming off the bench, sending a precise shot into the bottom corner for his first Frankfurt goal, but Nikolas Nartey turned home Undav’s cross moments later to earn Stuttgart all three points.
