Roma Haven’t Gotten a Lot from Late Summer Signings

Roma shored up their backline in peculiar fashion last summer, bringing in two veteran defenders after deadline day since they were out of contract, Mats Hummels and Mario Hermoso, significantly increasing their experience at the position.
The way those two additions have gone will likely discourage the Giallorossi from taking the same route in the future, Tuttomercatoweb informs. The former Borussia Dortmund stalwart put pen to paper on September 4th. Ivan Juric thought he needed time to debut, which he did only on October 27th, scoring an own goal. He didn’t play for almost a month afterward.
Claudio Ranieri revitalized him up until February, when he fell out of favor again. He started versus Athletic mostly because Zeki Celik was missing. His blunder, a misplaced pass and a harsh foul to stop the opponent headed toward the box, earning a red card at the 11th minute, cost his side the qualification.
Hummels inked only a one-year contract with Roma, and the error will likely spell the end of his time in the Italian capital, while Hermoso has already left. He moved to Bayer Leverkusen on loan in January. He has starred seven times with Die Aspirin so far.
The 29-year-old had gotten off to a decent start but couldn’t recapture a regular role after missing more than a month due to a thigh injury. He only featured 13 times with them. He’s unlikely to stay even should the German side not redeem him. He had signed a three-year deal.
One veteran addition was fine, two were overkill given the risks of adding somebody who didn’t do the pre-season preparation. They needed the former more in terms of skillset.
