Romelu Lukaku has called his Napoli exit the toughest spell of his career, alleging officials tried to boycott him by spreading false claims about his fitness.

"It was the worst year of my life... I chose to leave Napoli because I heard things and decisions were already being made... I was better off leaving," said Lukaku. He told Het Laatste Nieuws.

"The claim that I was not fit was not true. They probably said that in Italy to boycott me, but I am 100 per cent match fit."

The Belgian suffered a serious thigh injury in an August 2025 friendly against Olympiacos, then endured relapses and disputes after seeking treatment in Belgium. In September 2025 he also lost his father, amid extortion attempts over the body’s return.

He joined Napoli in 2024 for €30 million and helped win the club’s fourth Serie A title. Last season brought seven appearances and one goal, though he scored three in six for Belgium at the World Cup.

Now 33, he has signed a two-year deal with Fenerbahce for €6 million plus add-ons and played in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Lyon in the Champions League play-off. "Hopefully, I can see out those two years, then return home... I want to continue playing until 2030... But after that, it’s Game Over."
