Cristian Romero was named to start for Spurs against Manchester United on Saturday despite taking aim at the club’s board earlier in the week.
The Tottenham Hotspur captain took to social media after Deadline Day on Monday to describe the squad’s lack of depth as “disgraceful”.
Speaking ahead of the trip to Old Trafford in his pre-match press conference on Friday, head coach Thomas Frank said the matter has been “dealt with internally”.
“Apologies to all fans of you who follow us everywhere, who are always there and will continue to be,” the post read.
“We are responsible, there’s no doubt about that. I am the first. But we will keep facing up to it and trying to turn the situation around, for ourselves and for the club.
Romero had previously spoken out about his frustrations with the Spurs hierarchy following the defeat to Bournemouth last month when he seemingly scolded them for “lies” in a now-edited post on Instagram. Frank confirmed he had not disciplined the centre-back.
“He is our captain and one of our important players,” Frank told TNT Sports ahead of kickoff on Saturday morning.
After missing the last two games through injury, Micky van de Ven has been returned to the starting lineup to feature alongside Romero, who was also a doubt to play after coming off at halftime of last week’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City as he felt unwell.
