Romero’s goal drought puts Corinthians on alert

According to UOL, Ángel Romero’s first half of 2025 at Corinthians has been characterized by fluctuating form and an extended goal drought, highlighting his evolving role in a squad balancing multiple competitions.

The Paraguayan forward began the year as a reliable attacking option for then manager Ramón Díaz, receiving opportunities due to squad rotation between the Paulista Championship and the Libertadores. Notably, Romero stepped in for Rodrigo Garro as a starter in the Paulista quarter-finals, finding the net in a forward line featuring Yuri Alberto and Memphis.

However, as Garro managed to make himself available for the decisive phases—despite fitness problems—Romero returned to the substitute bench. Still, he was regularly introduced as an impact option in the second half of games, maintaining a presence in the rotation.

When Garro eventually paused to address his lingering injury, Romero was again reinstated as a starter but struggled to make his presence count. During this period, Díaz was dismissed, and Orlando Ribeiro temporarily took charge, but Romero continued to feature in the starting eleven. It was during this phase that Romero experienced his first significant goal drought of the season, going nearly two months without scoring—a run that ended on April 24, his previous strike dating back to March 2.

The arrival of Dorival Júnior as head coach did little to alter Romero's standing. The attacker has appeared in 10 of 11 matches under Dorival, splitting his time equally between starts and substitute appearances. Despite his substantial minutes, his output has been limited—Romero has not scored in his last 11 outings, with that last goal again recorded on April 24 against Racing-URU.

A captain within the squad, Romero’s contributions have become a talking point given his sequence without finding the net, despite regular opportunities and a high workload. As Corinthians navigate tactical shifts and ongoing injury issues, his performance remains under scrutiny, especially as the team continues to compete on multiple fronts.
