On Monday, Barcelona confirmed the departure of Ronald Araujo, who has joined Liverpool on a season-long loan. The defender was not in Hansi Flick’s plans for the 2026-27 campaign, which is why a move to the Premier League materialises relatively quickly once interest had been shown in him from the Anfield club.
Araujo, for whom Liverpool have a buy option that can be activated next summer, is expected to be a regular starter on Merseyside alongside Virgil van Dijk, and as per MD, he spoke to the club’s official media channels upon being unveiled as their latest signing. During the interview, he revealed that Luis Suarez, who also represented both clubs in his career, spoke to him prior to the move being completed.
“Just a few minutes ago I received a message of good luck from Luis Suárez wishing me the best. He told me that I have joined a great club and that I will enjoy my stay here very much. From the first minute I arrived here, I’ve been asked about those kinds of comparisons. I get along very well with him, we are quite close.”
Araujo also recalled memories of watching Suarez as a Liverpool player when he was still based in Uruguay.
“Of course as a child I saw Luis play all those fantastic games with Liverpool. We all know what he achieved, the history he made at this club during his time here. So it’s fantastic. We loved watching the English Premier League and in Uruguay we all got up early in the morning to watch the games.”
Ultimately, it makes a lot of sense for Araujo to have left Barcelona. A loan feels sensible for all parties, and the Catalans will hope that he does impress at Liverpool during the 2026-27 season, as it would increase the chances of them activating the buy option that they have.
