Ross McCormack, 40, joins ninth-tier Knaresbrough Town to continue playing career | OneFootball

Ross McCormack has signed for ninth-tier Knaresbrough Town, extending his playing career at 40. The former Leeds United striker spent four years at Elland Road, scoring 58 in 158 between 2010 and 2014.

Knaresbrough, who compete in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, announced his arrival. The club said in a statement that they were delighted to welcome him and pointed to a career that has included Rangers, Leeds and Aston Villa.

McCormack was made Leeds captain in his final season and won the Championship Golden Boot before joining Fulham that summer for a Championship record £11m. He later moved to newly relegated Aston Villa in 2016 for £12m, surpassing that fee.

The striker struggled to make an impact at Villa Park and departed on a series of loans, including spells in Australia, before later returning to Motherwell as his career began to wind down. In 2023 he stepped into non-league with Liversedge and Doncaster City.

This year he turned to the ring, suffering a first-round knockout on his boxing debut against former Leeds defender Matthew Kilgallon at a Liverpool charity event. He entered under the nickname Wrecking Ball at A Night To Remember II.

After breaking into Rangers’ first team in 2006, McCormack had a brief stay at Motherwell, joined Cardiff City in 2008 and moved to Leeds two years later.
