Ross McCormack, 40, returns to Yorkshire with ninth-tier Knaresborough Town | OneFootball

Ross McCormack has returned to Yorkshire, the former Leeds United striker joining ninth-tier Knaresborough Town at the age of 40 after the move was confirmed on Tuesday evening.

“I’m here to help, whether that be on the pitch or off it. But first and foremost, I want to enjoy it. You don’t get to my age going through a hard career and then not be able to enjoy playing football.” He was speaking to BBC Radio York.

McCormack spent four years at Leeds after arriving from Cardiff City in August 2010. He scored 58 goals in 158 appearances, including 28 in 46 during his final Championship campaign, which preceded an £11million switch to Fulham.

He netted 42 in 100 for Fulham, then joined Aston Villa and had a stint at Nottingham Forest before moves to Australia and back to Scotland. Into his 30s he played across the non-league scene, most recently signing for Giffnock North AAC last month.

“Every goal you score, I just can’t explain the feeling. To get that back… I went to Liversedge and Doncaster City but I was 19 kilograms heavier [than now]. I was never going to play, I was nowhere near fit enough.”

Knaresborough compete in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division and are seventh with 13 points from 7 matches. McCormack could add goals and the club might also see extra interest locally, with many Leeds supporters in Knaresborough and neighbouring Harrogate.
