Ross Stewart ‘could return’ as Southampton weigh second striker move | OneFootball

Southampton could re-sign Ross Stewart just weeks after his release, with Tonda Eckert saying a comeback is possible after the striker’s contract ended on June 30.

They have already missed out on Will Lankshear, as Middlesbrough pursued a £20 million package to land the Tottenham striker. A reported £8.5 million bid for Como’s Ivan Azon remains unresolved.

"I'm still in touch with Ross. It's possible [that he could return]. We definitely need a second striker. I think that is very clear." He was speaking to The Daily Echo.

"There will definitely be a second striker. Let's see who that will be."

Stewart was rewarded after his most available season in years in 2025/26 with a call-up to Scotland’s World Cup squad, though he did not start. He also produced 10 goal involvements in 25 Championship matches and scored in the play-off semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough.

With little credible transfer noise around the 30-year-old since becoming a free agent, a Southampton return remains possible. Compared with £20 million deals such as Lankshear’s, Stewart could be the cost-effective option Eckert is weighing.
