Rotherham United have been relegated and Bolton Wanderers and Wycombe Wanderers have been tipped to seal a £500k transfer in the aftermath...

Rotherham United are set to lose some key players in the summer following confirmation of relegation, which includes star striker Sam Nombe.

When individuals consistently shine in struggling teams, they quickly attract attention from more stable outfits further up the division. For Sam Nombe, he has scored 12 goals for a Rotherham United side who will finish in the bottom four.

He also has two assists, meaning the striker has 14 goal involvements in the equivalent of 24.5 games. He has played 29 matches in total but only 2,206 minutes for the Millers. Transfer interest for a centre-forward of that nature is likely to be vast in League One.

No other player has contributed to more than four goals in the squad. Bolton have been touted as a destination for Nombe due to his form, albeit it could depend on promotion and relegation for a number of League One and Championship sides.

Nombe has been backed to depart, irrespective of Rotherham being relegated already. However, they now have their fate confirmed, and we asked FLW's Millers fan pundit Tom Eyre for his thoughts on much he sees Rotherham getting for Nombe this summer, and what club he realistically sees him moving to.

He said: "Now that Rotherham have been relegated, I could see him going for half a million and definitely not the £1 million we spent for him. Definitely not.

"That is way out of the question now. As for a team I could see him going to? I don't think there is one team in particular that suits Nombe and his style. Nombe is quite an adaptable forward, especially in League One.

"For me, I can see him joining whichever club doesn't quite make the play-offs or maybe struggles in the play-off phase — maybe a Bolton, maybe a Wycombe, or something of that regard.

"Knowing that he's from London, he might be looking for a move back to London. So, I'm going to personally say that maybe Wycombe is a decent shout for him.

"Other teams like Plymouth, or just teams who are in that kind of shout for play-off spots but need that extra push to get there. I think he can be a really great striker, on his day, and for a steal."

Sam Nombe's League One record as summer exit looms

Nombe's injuries this season are a huge reason why Rotherham have been relegated and his goals, consistency, and even leadership could have been the fine margins between survival and the drop.

In 150 League One appearances, Nombe now has 42 goals and 18 assists. They have come during stop-start seasons and largely for teams struggling at the bottom-end of the division as well.

A move to a more dominant and creative League One side could see his numbers improve and is likely to be the next step in his career. However, Rotherham will hope to maximise the fee for him.

Now, it is looking like it is dramatically less than what it would have been just a year ago. It's perhaps a microcosm of the way the club has been run over and mismanaged over the last few years.
