Ruben Amorim is being linked with Benfica as a possible successor to José Mourinho if he departs at the end of the season.

ESPN reports that the Portuguese federation could offer Mourinho the national team job after the World Cup, regardless of the outcome.

Mourinho is under contract at Benfica until 2027, though a clause permits him to leave at the end of the season upon payment of compensation.

Should he move on, Rui Costa and the board would be considering Amorim, who recently left Manchester United, among their options to take charge.

His Old Trafford spell damaged his standing as one of Europe’s leading young coaches, yet in Portugal he still commands significant respect.

Amorim spent nine years at Benfica as a player and retains strong backing among the hierarchy. His knowledge of Portuguese football and three league titles with Sporting in six seasons also count in his favour.
