Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim’s position at the club is currently more settled than in a very long time.

Upturn in results

After a shaky start to the season, the Red Devils have collected 10 points from their last 12 available in the league.

This included an impressive 2-1 victory at Anfield versus Liverpool last month.

All this means that the Red Devils find themselves just two points behind Manchester City, who lie in second place with 10 Premier League games played to date.

Job security

Nonetheless, due to the fickle nature of football, a couple of bad results could see Amorim’s standing with the fans tumble once more and there could be more rumours swirling over the manager’s future.

Media attention is usually given to people speculating over who will replace Amorim rather than where he would move to but the Portuguese press have been discussing where the 40 year old could end up after Old Trafford.

Benfica

Despite enjoying great success at rivals Sporting CP as a manager, Amorim played 154 times for Benfica.

Interestingly, Portuguese outlet A Bola carry comments from Nuno Gomes who is vice-president in Noronha Lopes’ candidacy to be president of Benfica, claiming that Amorim will be manager of the club one day.

He referenced a dinner he had back in September with Amorim and Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana but claimed it was just to get an insight into how the two Manchester clubs function.

Gomes confidently predicted later in the interview that “I am convinced that Ruben Amorim will one day be Benfica ‘s coach . It didn’t happen sooner because, after some meetings, Amorim decided not to accept those conditions, at the time when he was at Casa Pia . I was the one who suggested his name at that moment.”

Commenting on Amorim’s character he concluded, “Ruben Amorim is a person with very strong convictions. We know how he communicates, works, and prepares his teams. When he was at Sporting , we all realized that Amorim is stubborn. At the end of last season, he was in a different situation than he is now at United. He may have considered, I don’t know, abandoning a project that was difficult to bring to fruition.”

Nonetheless, Gomes praised the United manager’s self-belief by stating, “he may have gone through phases where he was more discouraged and had ideas of slamming the door and leaving. Then, suddenly, he wakes up with the confidence that he will get the team playing well.”
