Benfica have postponed a move for Nahuel Herrera until the summer window, with the decision taken by president Rui Costa, according to Glorioso 1904.
The club want to keep focus on the remaining targets this season, so transfer matters are being pushed back, including the Herrera pursuit.
Herrera remains on the agenda and negotiations with Peñarol are expected to be revisited when the market reopens, with next season’s planning in mind.
The defender is viewed as a potential replacement for Nicolás Otamendi, who is approaching the end of his contract.
Herrera, a 21-year-old centre-back valued at €4.5 million, has made 40 appearances for Peñarol this season. That includes 30 in the Uruguayan league, eight in the Copa Libertadores and two in the Copa Uruguay.
Across 3,448 minutes, he has scored two goals.
