Southampton boss Russell Martin feels that West Ham loan star Maxwel Cornet fits in his system perfectly but stressed the winger needs to stay injury-free.
The Ivorian came to the Premier League in the summer of 2021 when he joined Burnley and made ten-goal contributions in his first season.
The Clarets faced relegation the next year and West Ham snapped him up but he struggled to make his mark at the London Stadium.
Saints signed him on a season-long loan this summer and boss Martin insisted that Cornet has been very unfortunate with his injuries in London.
Martin believes that the Hammers loanee ticks the boxes he wants from a player and keeping Cornet fit will benefit them.
“He [Cornet] has scored goals at this level in a breakthrough season but had injury issues at West Ham”, the Saints boss told a press conference about the on-loan Ivorian from West Ham.
“He is a really good footballer so if we can keep him fit, he really suits what we want to do.”
Cornet started only one Premier League match this season and he will be looking to clock up regular game time at St. Mary’s.
He will look to be the difference-maker this weekend when his side host Manchester United, who are also coming in search of a win after two losses.
