Ryan Mason’s position as West Brom manager is under increasing pressure as the team’s form continues to decline.

The Baggies made their return to league action on Saturday with a trip to face league leaders Coventry City.

Two goals from Aune Heggebo in the first half gave Mason’s side an initial 2-0 lead away to the Sky Blues, but they ultimately lost 3-2.

Josh Eccles got one back for Frank Lampard’s side before half time, and Jayson Molumby’s red card in the 49th minute was then followed by goals from Ellis Simms and Victor Torp.

West Brom have won just one of their last six league games, which has seen them slide down into the bottom half of the Championship table.

When asked about Mason’s future at the club, FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess claimed Wednesday night’s clash at Birmingham City could be telling.

He believes another poor performance could be the final nail in the coffin that leads to owner Shilen Patel making a change in the dugout.

“The two games this week against Birmingham and Swansea is definitely a very big factor in the future of Mason,” Burgess told Football League World.

“Just on Wednesday alone, if you look at a poor performance against Birmingham City, I think that could very much be the nail in the coffin for Ryan Mason.

“Becuase after the collapse on Saturday, being 2-0 up after a really good performance, just to immediately throw it away.

“It’s really looking like it’s not much time left for Mason.”

West Brom have struggled for form after making an initially bright start to the campaign.

This has been Mason’s first step into management in his career, having previously worked as an assistant at Tottenham Hotspur under the likes of Ange Postecoglou and Antonio Conte.

The Baggies have fallen to 17th in the table prior to this midweek round of action, with Albion four points adrift of the play-off places.

Next up for the Midlands outfit is a clash at home against Birmingham on Wednesday evening in an 8pm kick-off.

Ryan Mason sacking would be an extreme step to take so soon

It makes no sense for West Brom to appoint someone with no managerial experience whatsoever and to then expect them to be an instant hit.

Mason deserves time to figure things out at the Hawthorns, as the team have shown potential in these first 16 games, and are still only four points outside of the play-off places.

His side went 2-0 up away to the league leaders, and Molumby’s red card played a significant role in the 3-2 turnaround that ultimately cost them a result.

If Patel wants to bring West Brom forward, then appointing managers with no experience and giving them no time in the role won’t do the club any good in the long run.
