Ryan Mendes has been playing soccer for the Cape Verde national team for 16 years. A prodigy of his generation, his international debut came shortly after Cape Verde failed to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Mendes was only 20 years old at the time, but he already carried a dream that seemed almost impossible. Taking his tiny island nation to the biggest stage in world soccer.
After three more failed qualification campaigns, that dream has finally become reality. Ryan Mendes is going to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and this is his story.
Ryan Mendes is now a 36-year-old winger who has spent nearly two decades playing soccer across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The story of Cape Verde’s rise is inseparable from the story of its captain.
With a national-record 94 appearances and an unmatched 22 goals for Cape Verde, Mendes heads into the World Cup as the greatest player in the country’s history.
Born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, Mendes began his soccer journey with hometown club Batuque FC. His talent quickly became impossible to ignore. At just 19 years old, he was recruited by French side Le Havre and thrown into one of Europe’s most demanding development systems. Remarkably, his first senior club appearances came directly in one of Europe’s top leagues after progressing through the youth ranks.
Over the following years, Mendes transformed from an exciting prospect into a reliable attacking threat, scoring 22 goals in 92 appearances for Le Havre. His performances earned him a move to Lille in 2012, just one year after the club had won the Ligue 1 title.
The step up proved challenging. Injuries and fierce competition limited his opportunities, forcing Mendes to fight for every minute on the field.
Determined to stay sharp for Cape Verde, he embraced the life of a soccer journeyman. Loan spells at Nottingham Forest were followed by adventures in Turkey and the Middle East, where he continued building a career with just one goal in mind – hone his skills to help Cape Verde.
While his club career took him around the world, Ryan Mendes always viewed the national team as his true calling.
He received his first senior call-up in 2010. Cape Verde was still largely considered one of African soccer’s smallest nations at that time. Over the next 16 years, Mendes would help transform the Blue Sharks from underdogs into one of the continent’s most respected emerging teams.
Before reaching the World Cup, Ryan Mendes played a central role in other tournaments. He guided Cape Verde to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 2013. He scored three goals during qualification and started all four matches. At the tournament, Cape Verde reached the knockout rounds.
After waiting 56 years for their first AFCON appearance, Cape Verde returned immediately for the 2015 edition.
Once again, Mendes delivered when it mattered most. His winning goal against Zambia secured a crucial 2-1 victory and booked Cape Verde’s place at another major tournament.
His greatest AFCON campaign arrived in 2023.
Placed in a group featuring Egypt, Ghana, and Mozambique, Cape Verde stunned the soccer world by finishing top of the group. Ryan Mendes scored during the group stage before adding another decisive goal in a 1-0 Round of 16 victory over Mauritania.
Cape Verde’s journey eventually ended in the quarterfinals against South Africa, but by then the nation had once again proven it belonged among Africa’s best.
As the years passed, Mendes understood that his role within the team needed to evolve. The explosive pace that defined his early years inevitably began to fade. Instead of declining, however, he reinvented himself.
Ryan Mendes gradually dropped deeper into midfield, becoming a creator rather than simply a finisher. He evolved into the unquestioned leader of the dressing room and one of the most tactically versatile players in African soccer.
Today, Mendes is capable of operating almost anywhere across the attacking and midfield lines. He can play on either wing, as a center forward, second striker, attacking midfielder, or wide midfielder.
Ryan Mendes also handles many of Cape Verde’s set pieces. Whether standing over a penalty kick or delivering dangerous corners into the box, his consistency provides a vital attacking weapon for a team that often has to maximize every opportunity.
The veteran is still producing moments of brilliance. As recently as April, Ryan Mendes scored a stunning hat trick for Turkish side Iğdır FK during a 6-1 victory over Adana Demirspor. Not satisfied with three goals, he also added an assist.
At 36 years old, he appears to be peaking at exactly the right moment.
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Ryan Mendes is focused on only one thing: Representing Cape Verde on soccer’s biggest stage.
Earlier this year, Mendes described World Cup qualification as the greatest achievement of his career. It was a dream he had carried since childhood.
“Honestly, I still can’t believe what we’ve achieved.”
Speaking to AFP, Mendes explained that qualification was the product of years of sacrifice from players, coaches, and the people of Cape Verde. Yet he also knows the hardest challenge still awaits.
Cape Verde has been drawn into Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. On paper, they are overwhelming underdogs. But Ryan Mendes has spent his entire career proving people wrong.
On June 15, he will lead Cape Verde onto the field at Atlanta Stadium in Georgia. Thousands of Cape Verdean supporters are expected to fill the stands and create a home-like atmosphere for the Blue Sharks.
As the national anthem echoes around the stadium and the Cape Verde flag flies among the world’s soccer powers, the boy from Mindelo will finally witness the dream he spent sixteen years chasing. And regardless of what happens next, Ryan Mendes will know he already accomplished something extraordinary.
He took on the world and won.
