Wrexham have reportedly reached an agreement with Angers to sign left back Jacques Ekomié, Foot Mercato reports. Hamburg were unable to match the offer tabled by owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The fee has not been disclosed, although L’Équipe previously put a €10m, £8.5m, price on the defender and it is believed Wrexham’s bid is in that bracket.

Ekomié joined Angers on a free from Bordeaux in 2024 and has made 54 appearances. The 23-year-old made his Gabon debut at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and has 22 caps.

West Ham had been linked earlier in the window, with Bundesliga side Hamburg also considering him. Any deal would come as a boost after manager Phil Parkinson admitted recruitment has been difficult and the clock is ticking despite a decent squad.

“Going into the transfer market this summer we said we would look to add some quality, not quantity,” said chief executive Mike Williamson. “We have the foundations of a really strong Championship squad, so knew what we needed to be competitive and make a bit of a difference. It is not just the Premier League and top-end Championship clubs but those in the top five of leagues around Europe,” he told Radio Wales Sport earlier this week.
