Saido Berahino has taken his first step into coaching, joining Burundi’s national-team staff as he moves away from playing.

In a post on Instagram, he called the role a profound honour, thanked Burundi and Patrick Sangwa for the opportunity, and said he was excited for the next chapter.

The 32-year-old West Brom academy graduate had ruled out playing in England again during an interview last year, and has since worked towards his coaching badges while guiding young players.

Berahino scored twice in 18 appearances for Burundi as a player. He switched allegiance to his home nation after progressing through England’s youth ranks, where he netted 11 in 12 for the Under-21s.

His final outing came more than a year ago in Slovenia’s second tier, far removed from his Premier League heights with Albion.

A well publicised dispute with former Albion chairman Jeremy Peace over a failed Tottenham move, plus off-field issues, preceded his transfer to Stoke. He later had spells in Belgium, Cyprus and Slovenia, with a short return to England under Darren Moore at Sheffield Wednesday.
