Saint-Étienne will install square goalposts at Geoffroy-Guichard for their match des héros on 31 May, a tribute marking the 50th anniversary of the club’s 1976 European Cup run.

According to L'Équipe, the gala will reunite former club greats and other personalities, with proceeds supporting the fight against Charcot disease.

In 1976, Saint-Étienne reached the European Cup final, losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Les Verts struck the square woodwork twice, first with a left-foot shot from Dominique Bathenay, then with a header from Jacques Santini.

The club would surely have won had the posts been, as they are today, round.
