Benfica goalkeeper Samuel Soares drew attention after replying to Sandro Cruz’s Instagram post celebrating Slovan Bratislava’s Slovak league triumph, according to Glorioso 1904.
Cruz, a Seixal-trained former Benfica full-back, revealed he came close to quitting football three years ago, then said faith kept him believing something special could follow and that they had done it.
The Luso-Angolan, 24, left Gil Vicente in the summer for Slovakia and has now claimed a significant trophy with Slovan. His Instagram was quickly flooded with praise and congratulations.
Former team-mates reacted too. Soares and Nuno Tavares, who came through at Seixal with him, and Félix Correia, his colleague at Gil Vicente, all left messages under the post.
Cruz’s path has been testing, from Benfica’s academy to a loan at Chaves until their relegation, then a move to Gil Vicente before heading to Slovakia. Soares remains Anatoliy Trubin’s deputy at Benfica and has been urged, as an under-21 international, to seek minutes elsewhere, with the view that goalkeepers need matches to develop, not training alone.
