Sandro Carriço has ended a 13-year spell at Benfica to join José Mourinho’s backroom team at Real Madrid, turning down a renewal offer to remain at the club.

According to Glorioso 1904, the physiologist’s move is now official, with his name listed on Real Madrid’s website, and he regards the switch as a unique step in his career.

Carriço began with Benfica’s under-19s in 2013/14 and 2014/15, then stepped up to the first-team staff, staying until the end of last season.

The change follows a close working relationship with Mourinho during 2025/26, when the coach led Benfica before returning to Madrid. Mourinho worked daily with Carriço and was central to his appointment.

Mourinho’s Benfica side played 45 competitive matches last season, recording 27 wins, 10 draws and eight defeats, a 67.4% return, and did not win a trophy in his second spell at the Luz. After departing Benfica, he accepted Florentino Pérez’s invitation to begin a new cycle at Real Madrid, where he will work with Bernardo Silva next season.
