Some very interesting news on Sandro Tonali and his contract position.

When the Italy international signed from AC Milan in summer 2023, he agreed a five year deal taking him to 30 June 2028.

With that meaning that at the end of this current season, that Sandro Tonali contract would have only two seasons left to run, fans seeing it as a big priority that the midfielder needed to be tied down to a longer deal ASAP.

However, Craig Hope at The Mail with a huge exclusive on Wednesday.

He has revealed that Sandro Tonali signed a secret contract extension during his betting ban, which takes him up to end of June 2029.

On top of that though, that secret deal effectively takes him up to end of June 2030, as The Mail have also revealed that there in an option for the club to trigger yet another 12 months if they choose to. That takes Sandro Tonali beyond his 30th birthday.

During his betting ban, it was revealed that Sandro Tonali volunteered to take a pay cut as he wasn’t able to play at the time. It sounds like he obviously also agreed without any hassle to extend his Newcastle United deal by one year (effectively two years, although probably a one year extension trigger was probably also in the original contract), to cover the season lost to the betting ban.

The Mail stating about this secret Sandro Tonali contract extension; ‘…under the charge of former sporting director Dan Ashworth, Newcastle extended the Italian’s terms in what has been described as a show of trust and faith from both sides.’

As the man from The Mail also points out though, just because Sandro Tonali has a contract up to end of June 2029 (effectively end of June 2030), that does NOT mean that a new deal for the Italy international shouldn’t be a priority.

Newcastle United fans appear to see the NUFC midfielder as arguably our best player of all, so a new contract on improved terms to reward Sandro Tonali for his contribution so far AND to help convince him that his future should be here, sounds like the right way to go, for me anyway. Obviously adding on another year or more to his contract length, to give the club added security, would be a massive positive as well.

So this is how the updated Newcastle United contracts situation currently looks (via official club releases and media reports), when current deals are up, following this Sandro Tonali update:

End of June 2026:

Schar, Targett, Ashby, Trippier, Krafth, Lascelles, Ramsdale

End of June 2027:

Pope, Botman, Burn, Jacob Murphy, Willock

End of June 2028:
