Midfielder Sandro Tonali signed a ‘secret contract extension’ with Newcastle United during his betting ban until 2029, according to the Daily Mail.
Newcastle also have the option to extend by a further 12 months. The new deal does not change his current salary, but the club are open to renegotiating if he requests improved terms.
A few months after he arrived at St.James’ Park, he was banned for illegal betting activity and only returned to action in August 2024.
He has rediscovered his best form since his comeback. He played a vital role as Newcastle won the League Cup last season – their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
Giving Tonali a contract extension is a big coup for Newcastle, sending a message to the fans who questioned the club’s ambition after striker Alexander Isak joined Liverpool this summer.
The 25-year-old has formed a formidable midfield partnership alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes recently named him the best midfielder in the top-flight, ahead of Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo.
Tonali was an unused substitute for the second time this season as Newcastle recorded their second victory in the Champions League by beating Benfica on Tuesday evening.
Manager Eddie Howe will hope Tonali stays injury-free and continues to perform at a high level for the rest of the season.
