Santos are back in the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals for the first time in five years. According to Diario Do Peixe, their last appearance at this stage came in 2021.
Then under Fernando Diniz, Santos beat Libertad 2-1 at Vila Belmiro in the first leg, before losing 1-0 in Asunción for a 2-2 aggregate settled by away goals.
This is the club's 10th Sudamericana campaign. In 2003 they beat Flamengo in the preliminary phase and São Caetano in qualifying, then lost the quarter-final to Cienciano-PER. In 2004 they cleared Paraná, Flamengo and São Paulo in qualifying, then went out to LDU-EQU in the last eight.
In 2005 they lost to Fluminense on penalties in qualifying. A year later they beat Cruzeiro in the preliminary round, then fell in the last 16 to San Lorenzo-ARG. In 2010 they were knocked out in the preliminary phase by Avaí.
After nine years away, 2019 brought a first-phase exit to River Plate-URU. In 2021, after dropping from the Libertadores groups under the new format, they entered the last 16, beat Independiente-ARG, then lost the quarter-final to Libertad-PAR on away goals.
In 2022 they qualified directly for the group stage via the league, topped their pool on tiebreak, then lost in the last 16 to Deportivo Táchira-VEN on penalties at Vila Belmiro, amid post-match disorder. In 2023 they entered the first phase and were eliminated after defeat to Old Boys at Vila, in a match marked by protests and fireworks.
