Santos begin retrofit of Vila Belmiro organised stands, capacity target 25,000 | OneFootball

Santos have begun a new overhaul of the organised supporters’ stands at Vila Belmiro, starting with demolition of the wall and stairways behind the Rua Tiradentes goal.

With no update on the Nova Arena with WTorre, president Marcelo Teixeira and the board have turned to a retrofit plan to accelerate stadium modernisation, Diario Do Peixe reports.

For the visit of Flamengo on 8 October, a temporary wall and hoarding will reprofile the terrace, alongside a temporary metal staircase. These measures should not change capacity for the Brasileirão fixture.

Work is projected to take six months, pointing to completion in March next year. The aim is to raise capacity to 25,000 and extend the Cosmo Damião stand down to pitch level.

The project team includes presidential adviser Junior Bozzella, heritage manager Alexandre Librandi and administrative manager Luiz Fernando Vella.

Construction is being led by Grupo CPR. The away sector at Gate 17 has already had its steps doubled and the media area has been refurbished. Planned phases include upgrades to toilets and hospitality boxes, and removal of ground level boxes to stretch the cativas section.

Sections of the ground are expected to be closed during upcoming fixtures at Vila Belmiro. Before year end, Santos have five more home games against Flamengo, Bahia, Palmeiras, Grêmio and Botafogo.
