Santos have been charged by the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva after a supporter spat at Mirassol player Reinaldo during Sunday’s draw at Vila Belmiro in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

The club said in a statement that it had identified the supporter, forwarded the name to the authorities and was studying sanctions. The identification was the first step to try to avoid punishment for the club and for Vila Belmiro.

The case will be heard on Thursday by the fourth Disciplinary Commission. Santos have been cited under article 213, section I of the CBJD for failing to prevent and repress disorder, with a fine of R$ 100 to R$ 100,000.

Prosecutors also invoked paragraph I, which could lead to a loss of home advantage for one to 10 matches when the disorder is of elevated gravity or disrupts the event.

The incident happened at 25 minutes as Reinaldo prepared to take a throw-in. The perpetrator was in the Santos section and could not be identified at the time.

Santos were also charged under article 206 for causing delays to kick-off and the restart. The team arrived five minutes late for the pre-match protocol, so the game began four minutes late, and both sides returned one minute late after the interval, delaying the restart by two minutes. The penalty ranges from R$ 100 to R$ 1,000 per minute.
