Santos have been hit with a FIFA transfer ban over an unpaid debt to Monaco from the signing of midfielder Jean Lucas. The club were added to the list of sanctioned teams on Wednesday.
According to Globo.com, Santos are barred from registering players for three transfer windows or until they pay 2.032 million euros, about R$ 12 million.
FIFA ruled against Santos on 20 May 2025. The club appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the sport’s highest court, which rejected the case at the end of May.
Monaco opened proceedings after Santos paid the first two instalments of a 6 million euro deal, on 31 August 2023 and 30 June 2024, but missed the final 2 million euros due on 31 January 2025.
Santos later proposed splitting the last instalment, half on 30 August 2025 and half on 31 January 2026. Monaco rejected the offer.
Recently, president Marcelo Teixeira expressed concern and said Santos were still trying to negotiate payment with Monaco to avoid the sanction.
