América passed up the chance to go top of the Guard1anes 2021 table after conceding late on at Santos Laguna.
There was little to choose between the teams in an even first half at the Estadio Corona.
But América managed to take the lead a minute before the break with a goal that left questions hanging over Santos goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo.
Leo Suárez’s free-kick from distance wrong-footed Acevedo, who could only palm the ball into the grateful path of Henry Martín and the Azulcrema striker made no mistake from close range.
The visitors had a big shout for a penalty when Alan Cervantes appeared to handle inside the Santos area 20 minutes from time.
However, following a lengthy review, a free-kick was awarded to the defending team for a collision between Emanuel Aguilera and Acevedo in an earlier phase of play.
Los Guerreros made the most of that let-off by drawing level in the 82nd minute.
Again, a goalkeeping error was at play. Jesús Ocejo’s centre was coughed up by Azulcrema stopper Oscar Jiménez, and Santiago Muñóz was perfectly positioned to nod home.
It was a moment to remember for the 18-year-old Texas native, as it marked his first goal at senior level.
Muñóz’s effort put Santos top – ahead of Juárez on goal difference – with América back in fourth.
