Santos have opened a neurocognitive training laboratory at CT Rei Pelé, aiming to sharpen players’ decision-making, reaction times and reading of the game.

According to Diario Do Peixe, club footage shows athletes wearing helmets fitted with sensors during drills, with the kit monitoring brain and cognitive activity to analyse stimuli, rapid responses and behaviour across different scenarios.

The initiative combines technology, science and football, seeking gains that go beyond traditional physical and technical work, a trend increasingly seen at leading clubs worldwide.

In modern football, cognitive performance is understood to have a direct impact on output on the pitch, with reaction time, concentration, decision-making under pressure, spatial awareness and emotional control viewed as essential at the top level.

The Santos lab is designed to support that development, exposing players to game-like situations that stimulate the brain and target quicker, more efficient responses in matches.

The programme can also help guard against dips in mental performance linked to physical and emotional fatigue during a long season, while data gathered can be used to tailor training and track each player’s progress.

Recent years have seen European clubs increase investment in applied neuroscience, with cognitive exercises, neural sensors and behavioural assessments becoming common tools to boost performance and accelerate physical and mental recovery.
